You're probably wondering, who the heck is this guy?! Great, I have your attention now!
Life has been quite the roller coaster, but through these ebbs and flows, I have learned a lot about investing and business. I hope to pass my knowledge and experiences on to others, while journaling my thoughts on this blog to keep myself honest with, well, myself...
My journey has just begun, but I already have over ten years of experience in business and investing. I'd like to share this journey with you, and as I grow, I hope you will grow too!
In my early days, I was an entrepreneur in an industry that the world just wasn't ready to experience. During this time I learned to walk the line between visionary and insanity. Unfortunately, in the business and investing world, when you are early, you are wrong! After experiencing the pitfalls of complete and utter failure, all the while taking care of a family member, I decided to go back to school. This failure not only motivated and fueled my drive going forward, but it also was a huge win in my book. During that time, I got to spend a tremendous amount of time with my grandmother before she ultimately had to have full-time memory care. If you take away anything from this blog, I hope it is the realization that family is everything, and no other success in life can supplement that!
In college, I worked full-time, while taking a full-time class schedule at the University of Wisconsin- Superior. The reason I did this was not just because I was slightly older (only a couple of years) than my fellow students, but to push myself. I woke up at 4:00 am and worked until noon or 2:00 pm 5 to 6 days a week. Then, I went to class and worked on my education until 11:00 pm or midnight most nights. By my senior year, I took on an executive management role in the hospitality industry but still ended up graduating with honors. I left the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration that is concentrated in Finance, a minor in Information Systems, and nearly an Economics major too.
After graduating I thought, I'll transition immediately to the investment industry and take it by storm. The big joke was on me though. No real opportunities existed in my area, other than sale roles. And, no one wanted to take a shot on a kid from a public university that was far away from the major investment industry cities. So, I stayed in the hospitality industry and honed my investment skills and knowledge, all the while gaining real-world business experience.
Eventually, I found a great opportunity at a local boutique investment firm, Blue Water Capital Advisors, and I didn't flinch when told I would start at the bottom. I was confident that I would prove my worth rather quickly, which I did! Within a few months, I moved up to an Investment Analyst & Operations Manager role and became a Portfolio Manager within 18 months of our ETF strategies. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end, and the CEO of the company decided to sell the firm and retire. I played a key role in finding our acquirer, Great Waters Financial, and merging Blue Water Capital Advisors operations and clients with them. While we merged the organizations, I took on more responsibility managing our other equity, bond, and multi-strategy portfolios while my mentor moved on to his next chapter in life.
Now, I want to share my experiences, continue to expand my knowledge, and find my next adventure in the investment industry. Feel free to reach out to me anytime, as I love meeting new and interesting people, and I am always open to any possibilities or opportunities.
